SAD, Cabin Fever & Photography

One of the many disorders that has been in the forefront of the public eye lately is SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. As winter comes it becomes more reported on to the point of being annoying. When I was growing up my Mother called it cabin fever but that was not cool enough so the disorder of SAD was born. It is something that many if not all people suffer from and many have it but don’t know they have it. It effects people in different ways, some more severe than others.

River Bottom

A cold fall day exploring the river bottom turned out to be a nice warm fall day.  Funny how a day that looks like it will be bad can turn around.

Sofa Mountain, Waterton Lakes National Park

I love Sofa Mountain anytime, but early winter it really stands out. There is a lot of snow in those there mountains. October 4, 2018 and most years there may be a light dusting of snow, or maybe some frost but this year the snow is cold and deep. Great for building the snow pack and for pictures, not so great for people or animals trying to get through it.

With the hot summer it was nice to see some snow and moisture starting but even when you know you need it this early it is hard to take!

Banff & Kananaskis Fall 2018

I wanted to take a “fall” trip to Banff and Kananaskis for a number of shoots that I planned to do.  Well the trip was more like a winter trip than fall and I never got any of the shots that I went for.  I did manage to get chased away from an area that I wanted to shoot by a warden, something about no camping and well I did fall asleep while I was waiting for the snow flurries to stop falling – which they never did all night!!!! Still had a great time.  I can tell you that some of the back roads in southern Alberta are not fit for driving this time of year.  Some MAJOR ruts and challenges!

High Level Bridge, Lethbridge

Working on edits from the Bridge shoot the other night. The colors were amazing and with little wind I did a number of time exposures. Would like to do more before winter but not sure how the leaves are going to hold out.

It is funny living in southern Alberta to say that I would have liked a little more wind, but I would have. Not enough wind to shake me or the camera but enough to cause the clouds to move a little faster. When you are doing time exposures there is a fine line of not enough movement and too much. You want some things to show movement like the clouds and the water but you prefer to not have the trees bending over so much that they look like dancers. Tonight was just sort of getting the clouds to move enough to show how I wanted but I will take it.

Writing on Stone

An afternoon trip to Writing on Stone this past weekend. It was overcast and cool but the colors were amazing!!! Love this park when it is not unbearably hot!

Writing on Stone
Looking south down to the river

Surprisingly there were a lot of people camping considering the weather was cool and damp.  But as usual as soon as you walk a few feet into the coulees you may hear the people but you seldom see them.  Not a lot of animals out this trip, saw a number of Pronghorns just outside the park but that was it.
