Winter Boot Update

WindRiver Outfitting winter boot update

Winter Boot update

Well it has been a while since I got my new boots. So I thought it would be time for an update. I did not want to test them in really cold weather, I would have enjoyed a warmer winter, but that is why I bought them so they did get tested.

If I was to rate them on a scale of 1 – 10 I would have to give them 10.

Once they got through the break-in period, or should I say once my feet got through the break-in, they fit really well. They have AMAZING traction. In fact now that I wear them out for a walks the shoes that I usually wear feel very slippery. On snow and ice they have amazing traction.

-22C, stiff wind and warm feet!!!

As for warmth. In -35C I can stand in one place and my feet stay perfectly warm. I do not need to moving my toes or shift around my feet are warm. As warm as at home with the heat on and wearing slippers. When walking they are also perfectly toasty warm. This is great if you are a photographer and you need stand for a while shooting. With warm feet you will not be rushing to get the shot and get back inside.

Cool feature

One thing that I really like is that there is a pull strap on the back of the boots to help pull on. It is not needed but sure is nice to have. Makes pulling on very simple.

Worth the cost?

So are the boots worth the money that they cost? YES and more. I do not mind paying more money for something that does what it says. These boots do that and more.

Now my issue is that I need to make sure that I carry them with me. I went shooting the other day and forgot them at home. WHAT a difference trying to shoot with cold feet! These are also great to carry if traveling. If you had any car troubles and had these boots with you your feet would be warm till you got rescued. I would also take these if you were camping in cold weather as part of an emergency kit.

GREAT day of catch-up

A great day doing so many little projects and still working on one big project. Got some small house projects done. Took the dog for three long walks. Even as cold as it was today it felt nice to just be out. AND still working on updating the web site. The web site has had a lot of work done on it and in the process I have been pulling a lot of digital images in the files.

Came across this one and I still love it. Old wagon wheel in my backyard. From 2005. I have a 24×30 print of it in the studio but was amazed to see how well the file holds up against even the newest cameras today for sharpness and clarity.

As a side note if you are looking for more teaching material I have added a number of files to the website under courses. You can read and even download and print for free. I will try to keep adding to this list as I write more blog posts, another thing on my to do list for 2019.

At least with it being so cold outside I am able to get these jobs caught up. Would not argue with a warm spell for a while as long as the winds stay down!

Lethbridge Photo Locations – Private

I have been asked to add to my list of Lethbridge photo locations. This list is for privately owned locations that you may not know of. These listings tend to change regularly. If you know of a place I missed or a place that does not allow pictures any longer drop me a note. I will also add locations just outside of town as I find them so guess this list is not just Lethbridge photo locations.

Many of the owners that I talked to have the same information to pass along. They allow pictures but their business is not just for pictures so they may not be available at all times. The further in advance that you call the better.

As these are private places some will allow nude shoots but ask first. Also some mention that they prefer to have smaller groups. If you are using for a wedding having the day spread out so there are not 50 people hanging around is better. Some also state that you can rent the entire place for private functions but the prices are more than just to use a part of the location.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing, another way to pass the winter!

I have never been ice fishing. But if I was to go it would be inside one of these amazing huts! Truth be told I am not big into fishing even in warm weather. In my books stopping at a grocery store to pick-up your fish is easier and more enjoyable. But that is me.

Getting out!

This past weekend with the slight break in the frigid temperatures I decided that I would head out. I wanted to see what I could find worth taking pictures of. There was a lot to shoot. It was not what I was expecting but there was a lot!

My first stop was at McQuillan Reservoir. In a very short walk I found a number of subjects to photograph. From the ice fishing tents, the animal tracks to some rabbits and a few birds it was a fun day. Cannot say that I got to walk very far as the slight breeze that was blowing was enough to make it painful to stay out. But with so many subjects to photograph I had to take pictures. It is also funny how after a number of days of clouds that a day of even a little sun makes being outside enjoyable.

Winter Morning

“Morning. It snowed………. AGAIN”!!!

Each morning I always look out to see who is at our feeders. Yes FEEDERS plural, more than I want to admit to. Lately the bird mix has changed big time. Not just for the morning birds but for the entire day. Our usual mix for years has been the regulars: Sparrow, House Finch, Blue Jay & Flicker and the less regular: Downy Woodpecker, Junko, Nut Hatch & Chickadee. Lately the Sparrows have must have found a better place to go as we have few Sparrows coming to visit since this cold snap.

The one bird that is taking advantage of the feeders is the Junko. There are about 20 of them that have moved in and taken over. They are the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave at night. When the Blue Jays are sitting in the trees screaming to have their food cleared of snow the Junkos are happily eating away. When a Flicker swoops in to claim the peanut/sunflower tray they move to another feeder making the best of the situation.

This guy was the first one this morning. Digging through the snow to find his breakfast while the other feeders were still abandoned. He flew away once when I walked past the window but not more than 5 feet from the feeder and as soon as I walked away he was back. He had the look on his face that said he was not impressed with the snow but was fine with having the feeders to himself.

If it was not so cold I would put fresh water in the bird baths for them today. But with it being so cold by the time I add the water and get back to the house it is already freezing over. Oh well, they have lots of snow to eat for moisture and next week it is suppose to warm up so I will make sure they have water once the weather gets closer to freezing.

The good part of all the feeders is that I can take pictures without leaving the warm house. Shooting through the window may not give the best images but when it is -20C outside, snowing and blowing I don’t mind the windows. Well time to see who is outside now and take a few more pictures.

A flash to the past

Okay I admit that many days I live in the past. When I built this bottle carrier it reminded me of the old wooden ones that my Dad use to have at his gas station. Then I remembered the pop that we would go and pick up. Two pops – one was Pop Shoppe and the other was Pic-a-Pop. Bad idea to remember these as I had to set out on a quest to find them.

Pop Shoppe was fairly easy. I had found that years ago so it was just tracking it down at one of the stores I had seen it at. Pic-a-Pop was harder. I finally located the bottler and was able to track down some bottles of it. My journey to the past is complete for this project!

Black Cherry hands down the winner!
