Lethbridge Galt Museum Night Photography Shoot
I’ve been wanting to get out for a night photography session around Lethbridge for a while now. But like most people, the recent cold weather had me hiding indoors, keeping warm instead of braving the elements with my camera.
Last night, though, the weather finally cooperated—calm, mild, and paired with a beautiful sunset. It was the perfect excuse to grab my gear and head out for a shoot. Even better, I’ve been asked to lead an upcoming workshop on night photography, so I needed both photos and examples for my course material.
So out I went—to one of my favorite spots in the city: the Galt Museum.

Why the Galt Museum is Perfect for Night Photography
The Galt Museum is a fantastic subject after dark. It’s well lit, visually striking, and quiet enough that you can take your time without distractions.
Many photographers wait until it’s completely dark before starting a night shoot. Personally, I prefer to begin at sunset or just before sunrise. That little bit of natural light adds depth and color to the scene, creating more dynamic images than you’d get in full darkness.
That night, the museum’s architecture, glowing signage, and the warm light against the cool evening sky came together perfectly.

Tips for Night Photography
Night photography can feel intimidating, but with the right techniques, it’s one of the most rewarding types of photography. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Use a tripod. It keeps your camera steady for long exposures and prevents blur.
 - Fast lens if possible. A wide aperture (f/1.8 or lower) lets in more light, but don’t worry if you don’t have one—you can still get great results.
 - Keep ISO low. This reduces noise and keeps your images cleaner.
 - Switch to manual focus. Autofocus struggles in low light—manual gives you sharper results.
 - Try long exposures. Capture more light and experiment with creative effects like light trails.
 - Remote shutter release (or timer). Prevents camera shake when pressing the shutter.
 - Play with light sources. Streetlights, building lights, and signs add atmosphere and unique effects.
 - Bring a flashlight/headlamp. Essential for setting up gear in the dark.
 - Take test shots. Adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO until you get the look you want.
 - Be creative. There’s no single “right” way—experiment with angles, reflections, and compositions.
