Whether you’re shooting DSLR or mirrorless, a quick focus test helps you spot issues before they ruin a shoot. Sometimes it’s just a setting, other times it’s the lens or camera itself. Either way, checking saves headaches.
Why You Should Test Your Lenses
Even new lenses can focus slightly in front or behind your subject. That’s normal, but if it’s way off, you’ll want to correct it. Many cameras (like Canon’s 70D and 5D Mark IV) include micro focus adjustment, letting you fine-tune accuracy without sending anything away.
Before making this chart, I used to test focus by shooting an object and zooming in on the computer. It worked, but it wasn’t precise.
The chart? Fast, accurate, and dead simple. It even lets you intentionally set slight rear-focus if that suits your shooting style.
Mirrorless Isn’t Perfect, Check Anyway
Mirrorless cameras use a different focusing system, and while they solve many traditional focus issues, they’re not foolproof. A bad lens, a bad camera, or a wrong setting can still cause soft images.
So yes, I still recommend doing regular focus checks, even on mirrorless systems.
