Tune-Up Your Lenses — Get the Most from Your Glass
If you’re serious about taking great pictures, then ensuring your lenses are working perfectly is a must. In the video linked above, I walk you through several simple yet powerful tips to get your existing lenses firing on all cylinders — without needing to go out and buy new gear.
Tune-up your lenses – don’t delay
First off: now is a great time to check your lenses. Maybe you’ve been using the same gear for a while and assume it’s working fine, but lens performance can drift, dust can build up, mechanics can loosen, and you might not even know your results are being compromised.
In the video I guide you through a quick lens-tune-up process: cleaning optics carefully, checking for play in the focus/zoom rings, verifying autofocus accuracy, and testing for softness or corner fall-off. I also show how a few minutes of testing, shooting a standard target, changing aperture, zoom position, focus distance, can uncover issues you didn’t know were there.
Another big point: you don’t always need the “latest” lens to improve your images. By making sure what you already own is working as well as possible, you’ll often see sharper, more contrasty, more satisfying results. The right care + correct settings = big payoff.
Finally, I emphasise that tuning isn’t just about hardware: it’s also about being aware of how you’re using the lens, aperture selection, focus placement, shooting technique, stabilization, light direction — all of which the video touches on.
