When it comes to photo damage, water is one of the toughest challenges to overcome. In my experience, other than complete fire destruction, water damage can be the most heartbreaking form of loss.
Water can destroy your photos before you even realize there’s a problem. If your prints have been submerged for a long time, the emulsion layer often turns to mush, and even gentle handling can cause them to fall apart. However, if your photos were only exposed to water briefly, there may still be hope.
Water damaged photos – WARNING!!!
The most important thing you can do is avoid handling them more than necessary. Every time a wet photo is touched or moved, more of the image can be lost. And while the internet is full of “DIY” fixes, many of them cause more harm than good. One of the most common myths is freezing your photos, but as I explain in my YouTube video, it’s not the freezing that causes problems, it’s the thawing process that can lead to total destruction.
In the video, I share practical advice on what to do immediately after water damage, how to minimize further loss, and when to seek professional help.
