Teaching Tip – bring on the bad!

Getting to the issue when teaching

Whenever I am teaching I always ask students to bring me their bad images.  If I am critiquing work to help improve someones photography I ask to see the unedited images.  WHY?  Because anyone can luck out and get a great image, or spend enough time in Photoshop to fix an image.  But seeing the bad or unedited images will show what a person does most of the time.  This is true in other areas as well.  I don’t care what you are like when everything is going perfect, but what are you like when things are going bad?  You may be a great wedding photographer when the temperature is 20C and there is no wind or bugs, but what are you like in -10C and a 100k wind, or with a bride that is in a miserable mood?

Exposure Chart

I have been wanting to do this exposure chart for a long time and with it being a snow day it was a good day to work on it. It is not designed to be a 100% complete with data or is it to explain everything but it is a good cheat sheet to help when shooting.

You can print a copy of it for PERSONAL use only as long as you do not remove or alter any information.

Spring is coming!!!!

I was out walking the dog yesterday and could not believe how hot the sun was. A good sign that spring is coming and with spring the birds. I love the spring birds as they are in good health and their colors are starting to enhance so what better time for a bird course.

This year I have added a full day with (6 hours) of shooting.

Strange things customers have said…..

To help break up winter lets looks at some strange things that happen in the photography world! If you know me you will know one of my sayings is ‘There are no stupid questions” but sometimes people say things that cannot be explained as being anything other than really strange.  A couple weeks ago another photographer stopped in and we got discussing some of the strange things that people have said over the years. Seeing that it is so cold outside here are a few laughs to warm you up….

RAW vs JPEG

One of the questions that always comes up when I am teaching is “Do I use JPEG or RAW for shooting images in”? There is sooooo much information out there and most of it is either slightly off or very misleading.

Here is a quick rundown of the differences, If you have any additional questions feel free to ask!

So to start what is the difference between JPEG & RAW?

Who are you…. really??

I have written many times about not trusting what others say about how good you are.  So many photographers have been suckered into starting a business as friends and family tell them how good they are and really they have no true understanding about what it takes to succeed in running a business. Just the other day I saw a post by a well meaning person telling someone to change careers and become a photographer by under cutting other photographers and offering the same services just at lower rates, a perfect way to fail!
