Some history

by Mike on Apr.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

I was being interviewed for a article the other day and mentioned a picture that I had taken years ago, that got me thinking that I should make sure that I digitize the image.  So I dug up the image and thought that I would post it here.

The picture is a B-52 bomber on a simulated bombing run.  I think it was taken in the mid 90′s.

Red Rock Canyon Waterton – Parking lot closure

by Mike on Apr.19, 2010, under Uncategorized

Just saw this on Parks Canada web site.

For public safety, the Red Rock Canyon parking lot, picnic area and washrooms are closed for construction during spring and summer, 2010. Visitors can still use the bridges and hike, bike or horse-back ride on the trails.

Shooting with BIG glass

by Mike on Jan.23, 2010, under Uncategorized

Over the past few weeks I have been seeing a lot of people with some big lenses.  It is great to see people using lenses other than the standard wide angle ones that come with the camera. One thing to keep in mind – the bigger lenses need to be held much more stable than smaller lenses.

Yesterday I watched as a guy used his 400mm with one hand to take some pictures.  Problem was that even the smallest movement and the picture was out of focus (and he noticed that and could not figure out why), his other hand was in his pocket trying to stay warm.

Best way to hold your camera no matter what size of a lens is to use one hand to cushion the camera (palm on the bottom of the camera and your fingers turned upward holding the lens) and your other hand to hold the grip.   For real big lenses or if you tend to shake a lot, I do recommend a GOOD tripod.  Why spend $700 or more on a big lens and not get any good pictures with it.  A good tripod will set you back $200 plus but they are very worth it, and if you buy a good one it will last you a long time!

Another trick is if you are cold, use gloves.  Rushing through pictures or shivering will not allow you to take good quality pictures.

Coaldale Parade Of Lights

by Mike on Nov.28, 2009, under Uncategorized

Well you know that Christmas is fast approaching when the Parade Of Lights comes up. I don’t think that I have seen a better day for the parade, it started to snow early in the day and continued till just after the parade. A great scene seeing the floats with a light snow falling around them, it sure beats the minus 30 a couple of years ago.

As always some great floats lighting up the night, for our family it is the kick-off to the Christmas season. Add to that a great Turkey dinner at Wally’s and I am getting excited about the next 28 days.

Here are a few of the 300 plus images that I shot at the parade..

Working for the big guy!

by Mike on Nov.22, 2009, under Misc., Uncategorized

Wow in my 25 years as a photographer I have worked for many people and companies. From individuals that have let me capture a special part of their lives, to businesses that have brought me in to show their products or services off, to many governments. Well today I had a chance to work for someone extremely special….Santa!

I was privileged to get to record Santa arriving at one of our local malls with his reindeer. Even better was that my two boys were my assistants and got to help.

Here are just a couple of the images that I was fortunate enough to get. I wonder if Santa will get me that new lens that I asked for??
